How often to recharge a shower water softener

Updated Oct 26, 2026

Each recharge of the AG Water Softener Complete Set lasts about two weeks for one person at 10 grains with both cartridges; a second person halves that, and harder water shortens it. The table below gives the number for your hardness. If you're still choosing, start with what a shower water softener is.

Recharge interval by water hardness

Calculated from the manufacturer's rating at 10 grains, the only tested point.
Hardness (gpg)One cartridge, gallonsshowersComplete Set (both), gallonsshowers
5 gpg2941458828
10 gpg147729414
13 gpg1135–622611
15 gpg9851969–10
20 gpg743–41487
25 gpg5931185–6

Shower counts assume ten-minute showers at 2.1 gallons per minute.

The 10 gpg row is the tested one: about 294 gallons per recharge with both cartridges at 10 grains of hardness, roughly 14 ten-minute showers.

At one ten-minute shower a day, the showers column is the number of days for one person.

Find your hardness on your utility's report or on the city pages at My Apartment Water Quality, then read your row.

What a recharge involves

Each cartridge recharges in its own pumped cycle of about 40 minutes, and the pump stops on its own. Each one takes 500 grams of plain salt (zero additives) in the brine tank. The pump plugs into any USB charger or power bank. Two cartridges in series: one keeps softening while the other recharges. Before your next shower, run the water for about a minute to flush the last of the salt water. The full recharge steps, with the parts, are on the setup page.

How other shower softeners compare on recharge

At 10 grains per gallon, the U.S. average they cite, a ShowerStick gives about 58 minutes of soft water before it needs regenerating, which works out to roughly weekly for a daily shower, per watersticks.com, checked October 23, 2026.

SoftWaterCare runs about a month between recharges for one person, per softwatercare.com, checked October 23, 2026.

Arius's product page says roughly every 2 weeks for a two-person household, checked October 23, 2026.

Two people, harder water

Each recharge lasts about two weeks for one person at 10 grains with both cartridges; a second person halves that, and harder water shortens it. At 15 gpg the Complete Set treats 196 gallons, or 9–10 showers, which at one ten-minute shower per person per day is about 9–10 days for one person and about 5 days for two.

Frequently asked questions

Can I shower while the softener is recharging?

Yes. Two cartridges in series: one keeps softening while the other recharges.

Do I need to recharge every day?

No. See the table above: even at 25 grains it gives 5–6 showers per recharge with both cartridges.
